User research and UX for a state services app with an AI agent inside it

Product design, agent controls, product future state, and working prototype. 2024–2026.

Principal product designer · a U.S. state’s services app · 2024–2026

A state services app where an assistant handles the routine journeys and a person stays in charge of the rest.

Governed agents for state services · government · 2024–2026

A state civic-services assistant, validated under stage gates: agentic access to services, public-comment processing and guided government forms, with a person in charge at every step that matters.

Decision
The first release was limited to the public app and a smaller set of service journeys. Wallet, credentials, and voice were deferred until the initial approach had evidence behind it.
What I did
User research, stakeholder workshops, UX design, journey mapping, functional prototyping.
Role
I led workshops with state service owners, prioritized the first resident journeys, defined where human control was required, and built the working prototype for the assistant, deadlines, permits, and profile.
